Electric utilities face growing pressure to launch managed charging and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) programs that deliver real grid and customer value. Technology choices made early in program design can determine whether that value is ever realized. Selecting equipment without understanding communication standards can lock a program into a narrow set of vendors and limit visibility into performance. Drawing on industry research on program design best practices for smart charge management and V2X, we’ll show how OCPP 2.0.1 addresses fragmented standards, limited visibility, and cybersecurity gaps.

Michael Badeski joined us from Con Edison, who shared his perspective on one of the most pressing issues in managed charging today: data consistency and reliability. We then introduced EVCAN’s Technical Specification and Qualified Product List, showing how it turns OCPP 2.0.1 conformance into a practical filter for technology eligibility.

    Michael Badeski leads program strategy and regulatory policy for Vehicle-Grid Integration at Con Edison, the utility serving New York City and surrounding area. He covers SmartCharge New York, the largest residential managed charging program in the country with 30,000 participants, SmartCharge Commercial, a first of a kind commercial managed charging program that enrolled over 30% of the charging capacity in the service territory in its first two years, and SmartCharge Tech which encourages the installation of load management technology. Michael brings customer-centric innovation practices from past work as a biotech entrepreneur, and data-driven rigor from a background in engineering for electrified public transportation fleets. He holds a B.Eng. from McGill University in Montreal and an MBA from INSEAD.
